OpenAI reportedly preparing to pause ChatGPT Pro sales as Astra demand strains capacity
A post says OpenAI is preparing to pause ChatGPT Pro subscriptions because demand for GPT-6 Astra is too high, showing that even a well-resourced lab can hit inference capacity limits.
openai is now preparing to pause selling pro chatgpt subscriptions. the reason is the demand for astra is too high. the interesting part is that this isn't some small lab running out of gpus. openai has spent years locking up enormous amounts of compute, and demand for one model is still growing fast enough that capacity is becoming the bottleneck. this is probably where the frontier race is headed: having the best models isn't enough anymore. you also need enough inference capacity to let millions of people use it without destroying limits, or reliability. and as models get more capable, people use them for longer, harder, and more expensive tasks. so better models create more demand, which requires more compute. hopefully this gets resolved quickly.
