A big Sonnet 5.5 jump would erode OpenAI's pricing edge
The view argues that if Anthropic's mid-tier Sonnet matches the flagship, OpenAI's low-price-for-performance advantage shrinks, and it would need GPT-6.1 Astra to respond quickly.
it would be a huge blow to openai if sonnet 5.5 is as big of a jump as opus 5.5 was. sol's biggest selling point has been the cost. and frontier level performance at a much lower price per task than anything anthropic had. but sonnet is anthropic's cheaper mid tier model. if it matches or beat sol, that advantage gets a lot smaller. and a better sonnet also helps anthropic's biggest problem. it's lighter to serve than opus or fable. more people get a great model without eating all their compute. openai would need an answer fast. gpt-6.1 astra maybe.
