We're at the half way point of Cloudflare's Birthday week, welcome to day 3 and the theme today is agents, agents, agents! 💰 Pay Per Use & Monetization Gateway beta 🚏 AutoRouter: intelligently route to the right AI model 🤖 Trigger coding agents based on observability data 📦 Rethinking Containers (6x faster startup!) 🌎 Simplified Domains for humans & agents 📈 Identify AI model overuse with User Insights 🧡 Cloudflare Impact: $100 million in donations Let's take a closer look at what's in these announcements. 💰 Pay Per Use & Monetization Gateway beta 💰 Automated bots have always been prevalent on the internet, predominantly in the form of crawlers. However, with the rise of AI agents, automated bots now outnumber humans on the internet in terms of request volume. This poses a new challenge, as those automated bots are not there to click on adverts. They are there to crawl your content, and at present, largely do it for free. If they want to use your services, there's no easy way to do so when sign up is often required. This is changing the business model the internet was built on, and the internet needs to adapt to this new norm. Cloudflare is helping to build that new model. You can see what bots are visiting your website, set the terms you wish to be paid for your content. Alongside that, there are two mechanisms to charge for your content and services: - Pay Per Use: this allows publishers to license their content. AI companies offer to pay, and publishers choose when to accept, with usage reporting, billing, and payouts handled by Cloudflare - Monetization Gateway: site owners can allow AI agents to use their services using the HTTP 402 protocol. You can charge per request, query, or token. Both of these are now in beta, with Monetization gateway starting out as a closed beta. The vast majority of companies are now making heavy use of AI, but that comes at a cost. There are a wide variety of tasks that AI agents are undertaking for their human supervisors, but how do you pick the right model for each tasks? For example, summarising a report you've been sent needs a different level of intelligence to investigating performance issues in a complex C++ codebase. At present, which model to use is largely left up to users to decide. In a lot of cases, people just opt for the most intelligent model, which drives up costs. That's where AutoRouter on Cloudflare's AI Gateway comes in. It's been tested internally for a few weeks, and so far has shown a 30% reduction in spend with comparable performance to GPT-6 Sol. AutoRouter is available today in open beta on Cloudflare's AI Gateway! There's a cool deep dive on how it's built, so I recommend reading the full blog here: https://blog.cloudflare.com/auto-router/ 🤖 Trigger coding agents based on observability data 🤖 One of the big wins from AI is being able to have it take action on things you didn't even know existed, or perhaps would have taken a while to notice. Even if you did notice, then you have to spin up an agent yourself and monitor its progress. This is inefficient, when automatic monitoring and dispatch to an agent can happen automatically and let you know when the fix is ready. That's where Issues comes in, now in open beta. Using your observability data from your Workers, Cloudflare will automatically trigger a cloud agent of your choice when issues are detected. Starting today, Issues can: - Group repeated exceptions, 5xx responses, and error logs into one issue. - Send the error, stack trace, logs, traces, and Worker version to a configured coding agent. - Trigger the agent’s configured workflow: triaging an issue to querying more data to opening a pull request. Internally, Issues already caught two issues with the Workflows product on its first day of being enabled and you can try it today with one line of config in your Worker! That's why they have been redesigned for on-demand agent sandboxes. With the new Durable Object scheduling policy, you can choose which container image and compute size at runtime, as well as manage image rollouts in code rather than application-wide deploys. They are faster too. In ComputeSDK's benchmark, median time-to-interactive fell from 4 seconds to 648ms, a 6x reduction. In part, this is thanks to a new prepared Debian image with Node.js, and file system snapshots which are in public beta. Your agents can now launch multiple sandboxes from the same checkpoint. All the new functionality is available today, and you can migrate at any point. The legacy Container and Sandbox classes will stop receiving updates at the end of the year, but will continue to function as they do today. Well, you could soon be in more domain debt as Cloudflare has redesigned its Registrar domain search. Each search now shows that name across all 420+ extensions, with results loading as you type, alongside filtering and sorting. Behind the scenes, it's using several techniques to make that search as fast as possible (e.g. prepared availability data, DNS, cached answers, and live registry checks). There's an expanded Registrar API too, available through Cloudflare's MCP server and the new cf CLI. And of course, that means your agent can buy domains on your behalf too. To celebrate Birthday Week, there's a bunch of discounts available right now, including .io, .dev, .app, and .tech! For example, you can now group conversations by task (coding, research etc.) as well as see what users & agents are driving usage, and across what models. This allows insights to be shown such as "model overkill" alongside potential savings, allowing you to see where you could be making improvements in terms of efficiency. As you might imagine, this is excellent when paired alongside AutoRouter. You can use the insights to see what sort of improvement you may see from introducing model routing, or perhaps not, if your employees are very diligent in picking their models. These programs support initiatives that support organizations that serve the public. Over time, these services have grown significantly, with Project Galileo protecting more than 3,500 domains, across 120 countries, resulting in 38.5 billion attacks blocked in 2025. Make sure to follow along for Day 4, which is going to be another banger!
