Google reportedly tests Gemini 4 variant codenamed Carbon internally
A leak says Google employees are already testing another Gemini 4 model codenamed Carbon internally, with coding compared to Claude Opus 5.5, before Argon gets a broader public rollout.

🚨 JUST IN: $GOOGL EMPLOYEES ARE ALREADY TESTING SOMETHING BETTER THAN GEMINI 4 ARGON. AND THEY'RE COMPARING IT TO CLAUDE OPUS 5.5. This is interesting, especially with how aggressive Google has become in AI lately. $GOOG employees are testing another Gemini 4 model internally, codenamed Carbon, even before Argon gets its broader public rollout. And apparently, the early feedback is pretty good. One employee said Carbon feels comparable to Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 for coding, while others were impressed with its performance inside Google's internal coding platform, Jetski. Remember, Google has been testing several Gemini 4 variants under the names Argon, Barium and Carbon. An internal version called Barium-B was selected to become the publicly announced Argon. The timing is interesting because Google only announced Argon on September 30, with a strong focus on coding, long running tasks, financial and legal work and defensive cybersecurity. Before that model is even widely available, employees are already discussing a potentially stronger checkpoint. I think Google is trying to shorten the gap between internal model improvements and actual developer adoption. Claude has built a serious position in coding, and OpenAI has been pushing Codex aggressively. Google cannot afford to have Gemini Enterprise and its new persistent agents relying on a model developers consider weaker for complex engineering work. A stronger coding model would make the entire Google AI offering more competitive, particularly when Google can distribute it through Cloud, Workspace and its agent infrastructure. But I still won't declare Carbon an Opus killer based on a few internal comments. We still need independent benchmarks, pricing and real developer feedback. Google hasn't even confirmed whether Carbon will ship publicly. I strongly think that Google's next competitive push will be heavily focused on coding agents. If Carbon performs as employees are suggesting, Anthropic and OpenAI could face another serious competitor for high value developer workloads. Can Google turn that model improvement into Gemini Enterprise and Cloud usage? We have to see that.
