Astra's token savings don't mean cost savings: pricing is 2.5x Sol's, one founder says
A SaaS founder argues Astra's lower token use per task doesn't make it cost-efficient, since its $10/$50 per million token pricing is far above Sol's $4/$20, and calls for measuring dollars per successful task.
🚨 GPT-6 Astra is token-efficient. That doesn’t necessarily make it cost-efficient. 👀 I think people are mixing those two up. Astra can apparently solve tasks using dramatically fewer tokens than GPT-5.6 Sol. That’s impressive. But Astra costs $10/$50 per million tokens. Sol costs $4/$20. So Astra can use half the tokens and still cost more to run the same workflow. That’s the catch. As a SaaS founder, I don’t really care how many tokens my model saved. I care how many dollars came out of my account to get a successful result. The metric I actually want to see is: $ per successful task. Not tokens per task. Not benchmark scores. Not how beautifully the model reasons. If Astra uses 50% fewer tokens but those tokens cost 2.5x more, calling that “cost-efficient” feels misleading. Token efficiency is impressive. Cost efficiency is what customers actually pay for.
