GPT-6 Astra Pro hands-on: Pro is a separate reasoning mode that runs parallel subagents
The author explains that ChatGPT's Pro toggle switches model families from Sol to Astra, and observed Astra Pro running about three subagents for roughly an hour, suited to high-stakes planning rather than basic research.

OpenAI got its own Pro reasoning mode wrong. They quietly corrected "GPT-6 Pro" to "GPT-6 Astra Pro". I spent yesterday digging through this confusing mess. fml. What I figured out: - GPT-6 Pro is powered by Astra, but Pro isn't simply another reasoning-effort level above Max. - Pro is a reasoning mode, separate from reasoning effort (thinking level). - ChatGPT's Pro selection switches model families. Instant through xhigh use GPT-6 Sol, while Pro uses GPT-6 Astra. - Standard vs. Pro mode: Different execution configurations, not just different thinking budgets. - Pro isn't necessarily better than Astra Max/Ultra on every task. - Is Pro equivalent to Ultra thinking? No. And don't confuse Ultra with Ultrafast. - Many people assume Pro is just the same model thinking for much longer. That's incomplete. - I'm already using Astra in Codex and Work. What GPT-6 Astra Pro adds in Chat is a different execution configuration and experience. Pro can involve additional inference-time compute and orchestration, including parallel agents, rather than simply extending sequential reasoning. The exact reasoning budgets, agent counts, and aggregation mechanisms aren't disclosed. (why?) Basically, extended thinking from the dinosaur era, now with orchestration ig. From my testing: ChatGPT Chat Pro use Astra with undisclosed reasoning effort and parallel agents. I've observed ~3 subagents working for roughly an hour for critical planning/spec (product design, sys arch), big discovery, and high-stakes work where mistakes have serious consequences. I can see the value. For basic research, Pro mode is overkill.
