a few years ago I'd have killed for this job. on friday it DMed me and I turned it down the same night. @vercel is hiring someone to own the storytelling for their Agent Stack, v0, and the open source portfolio including next.js. reporting into their head of comms. with all the momentum they have on agents right now, this is close to a dream role. the fit is kinda ridiculous too, and I won't pretend I didn't think about it at 11pm. except I'm building an AI startup for PR/comms teams, so the timing doesn't work. but how the message found me is the whole lesson, so I asked Jeanette if I could share it. she didn't find me with a LinkedIn search like most recruiters. she found me here, on X (my guess is friday's Jev demo that went viral). read what I post about agents, followed it to my personal site, which I have never once linked from LinkedIn, and noticed it runs on Vercel. then she named the hiring manager, scoped the role, and wrote one line most companies would never put in a recruiting note: "someone who knows the difference between an open sourced community that feels engaged and one that feels marketed to." everything is telling you this is a team that knows exactly what it wants, knows where to find it, and did the work to get it. best recruiting message I've ever received, and I read and send a lot of cold outreach for a living. the part I keep relearning is this: I did not apply. I did not network my way to this. I posted what I was building most days for a year with no plan for any of it. the message came because the work was public and findable. and it keeps happening. almost every good thing in the last year started the same way. customers. partners. the people I now build with. all of it traced back to something I put out with no expectation attached. You can't make luck.
