anthropic genuinely took openai by surprise and blew up their plans oai probably expected an incremental opus release roughly on par with gpt-5.6 sol, while astra maintained their frontier lead until the next fable, which they were confident 6.1 astra would match soon after but opus 5.5 turned out to be a massive leap over 5.1
