Opinion: open-weight models are falling further behind Opus 5.5 and Astra 6
The author argues that with Kimi K3.1 Pro's release, open-weight models have fallen further behind frontier models like Opus 5.5 and Astra 6, while Haiku 5.5 and Luna 6 offer better coding at lower cost.
Open weight models are in serious trouble. When Kimi K3 dropped months ago it was near frontier in animation and frontend. At the time everyone assumed open weight models were closing the gap. Now K3.1 pro drops and the gap to frontier models like Opus 5.5 or Astra 6 have never been larger. Worse yet I would trust the coding capabilities of Haiku 5.5 and Luna 6 over K3.1 at a fraction of the cost. OpenAI and anthropic are going to continue to reduce pricing leaving open weights in a difficult position.
