After opening sign-ups outside business hours, the author added screening that combines Exa search and Jev to filter out abusive registrations from people without real company emails, and says it works well.

So we've opened up sign-ups to PostShiba outside of biz hours and to keep abuse down I've added a screening that uses a combo of @ExaAILabs and @typesafeai Jev to make sure they are a real person at a real company who has legitimate email reasons to use us. Works well!
