OpenAI DevDay brings Dots to ChatGPT and opens the Agents API
At DevDay, OpenAI put Dots inside ChatGPT with dedicated cloud compute, phone calling and over 4,000 app connections, and opened an Agents API; the author argues pure wrapper agent startups were commoditized overnight.

If your AI startup is just a model plus an inbox loop, OpenAI just turned your product into a default feature. At DevDay, OpenAI rolled out Dots inside ChatGPT, packing dedicated cloud compute, phone calling, and over 4,000 app connections into Pro and Business Premium tiers. Alongside it came the Agents API, giving developers native access to memory, computer use, and multi-agent coordination, backed by a Decisions API that picks from predefined actions with granular permission gating. The orchestration harness that dozens of teams spent months building was commoditized in one afternoon. Yet the native stack has clear guardrails. Dots currently serves only single users, with team collaboration locked in an enterprise pilot. It runs entirely on OpenAI cloud infrastructure with zero self-hosting, and initial user feedback has been mixed. That leaves a very specific dividing line. Dots handles consumer execution, but enterprise operations require workplace plumbing: enforcing data residency, capping cost per task, restricting outbound messages, and auditing multi-model deployments. Companies do not want their core operations captive to one model vendor. That defense holds until distribution moves. Altman confirmed a mass-market version is heading downmarket, and once native agents hit cheaper tiers across ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users, the survival window for tool wrappers shuts completely.
