Developer calls Dots overrated and Sign in with ChatGPT underrated at DevDay
The author argues that Sign in with ChatGPT was the most underrated DevDay launch, while always-on assistants like Dots have already been done by Grok Bot and are nothing new.
For me, the most underrated launch at DevDay: Sign in with ChatGPT. Everyone is talking about Dots. Users now pay $20 to ChatGPT, $20 to Notion, $20 to a coding tool. Same models underneath. BYOK never fixed it because normal people don't know what an API key is. Sign in with ChatGPT fixes it. Usage counts toward their ChatGPT limits. As a developer, you ship AI features with no inference bill. As a user, you pay once and control the budget per app. It's Sign in with Google/GitHub, but for compute. 1.2B weekly users. OpenAI just became the default wallet for AI apps. Big. Second, overrated launch: Dots. An always-on agent that "gets to know what matters to you" sounds great. But we have already seen Grok Bot and OpenClaw doing the same thing. Calling your agent live on the phone or chatting with them over iMessage is not a flashy thing anymore. That was the wow moment a year ago. Now it's the baseline.
