OpenAI's ecosystem lead outlines ChatGPT plugin direction at DevDay
At DevDay, Vibhor Chhabra described plugin extensions, MCP event watching, and ChatGPT Sites hosting MCP servers, while noting reliability and discovery work remains.
OpenAI's ecosystem lead Vibhor Chhabra laid out where ChatGPT is going at DevDay. His thesis is that a conversation is often only the beginning of a task, and the goal is making capabilities feel like a natural part of working with ChatGPT. 1. Plugin Extensions. Partners bring interactive experiences into ChatGPT. Adobe: image edits with hands-on controls. tldraw: a shared canvas with the agent. MagicPath: interactive prototypes you can edit yourself. 2. A plugin can package skills, an MCP server, or both. Builders get three ways in: reusable workflow knowledge, live information, or actions that finish a task. Plugin Creator plus automated submission checks are new. 3. Discovery, ranking, and recommendations are getting better, in the directory and inside conversations. The stated goal is suggestions with good judgment about when they add value and when they get in the way. 4. MCP Events. Ask ChatGPT to watch for supported events, a new message or a document comment, and respond when they arrive. 5. ChatGPT Sites can now host MCP servers, including plugin extensions. His honest caveat is that plenty of work remains on reliability, discovery, and developer experience. Ecosystem plays live or die on that, not the launch demos.
