GPT-6 Astra reportedly cracks 1941 Enigma message in about 10 hours

A recounted result: Astra and an agent workflow searched archives, built an Enigma I simulator and cryptanalysis code, and solved an 82-letter ciphertext, then built a site documenting it.

I think AI research agents are entering a very different phase. That's an amazing progress: GPT-6 Astra reportedly solved a previously unsolved 1941 German Army Enigma message in roughly 10 hours. The message had an 82-letter ciphertext with 12 uncertain positions, creating 13,824 possible source readings. Astra and its agent workflow reportedly searched historical archives, investigated the uncertainty, built an Enigma I simulator, wrote cryptanalysis code, ran parallel experiments and tested competing hypotheses. Recovered plaintext translates roughly to: “Please specify the route of march. I am in Rosenow, Rosenow. Immediate reply by radio.” What stands out to me isn't simply that an AI solved an Enigma message. Researcher behind the challenge said he spent 99× more effort building the website documenting the challenge and solution than on the actual code-breaking effort.👀 He also said Astra handled much of the website development itself. That part is honestly fascinating to me. more here https://mvueh-enigma-solved.carterl.chatgpt.site/
