OpenAI to merge Chat, Work, Codex and Dots into one

A user testing Dots notes there is no model picker, it currently runs GPT-6 Astra, and chat, work and coding all happen in one window, though deeper conversations suffer.

OpenAI said that going forward, ChatGPT will merge Chat, Work, Codex, and Dots into one and move in the direction of Dots. Let me share the characteristics of Dots that I noticed while using it. There's no model picker. Right now they said it runs on GPT-6 Astra, but once routing becomes automatic, we'll have no way of knowing which model we're using. And it does everything, chatting, work, and coding, all inside the chat window. Honestly, this part is convenient. Doing everything in one place? I don't dislike that. But the problem is that this means the conversations that felt unique to Chat, which came from Chat and Work having different environments with different prompts, guardrails, and so on, will now disappear. Right now, Dots doesn't feel like it has heavy guardrails so much as it feels like deep conversations just aren't supported. And looking at OpenAI's moves, it feels like they're pushing forward with this, claiming that being able to do everything in one place is convenience. And they'll probably keep expanding what AI can do even more than now. But @OpenAI, that isn't convenience. Simplicity isn't the only solution. Real UX is making people feel convenience while complexity, sophistication, and choice are all applied.
