AI price war cuts both ways: cheaper APIs, pricier subscriptions
An opinion post says pay-per-use API pricing keeps falling, citing Gemini 4 Argon's mid-tier pricing and Claude Haiku 5.5's 90% price cut, while flat-rate subscriptions get more expensive as OpenAI drops its $200 plan for a $500 one.

There's a price war going on in AI. OpenAI has cut their API prices again and again. Gemini 4 Argon promises high-end capabilities at mid-tier pricing. Claude released the new Haiku 5.5 at 10% of its predecessor's cost. But there's another side. While API prices fall, value in subscriptions shrinks. OpenAI just killed its popular $200 plan and introduced a $500 plan instead. So what looks like one trend is really two. → Pay-per-use gets cheaper → Flat-rate plans get expensive I never liked those highly subsidized plans. There is no way to compete with these without spending unholy amounts of VC money. When they go away, the market opens up.
