11.4M Claude accounts banned in H1 2026
Anthropic's Claude bans jumped from 690K to 11.4M, driven by its supported-regions policy that checks IP, ownership and control, with roughly a 10% appeal success rate.
Eleven point four million Claude accounts got banned in the first half of 2026 alone, up from 1.45 million in the second half of 2025 and 690,000 before that. Anthropic's anti abuse systems are scaling faster than almost anything else the company ships, and most of those bans trace back to one policy: supported regions. Here's what that actually means. Five places are listed as supported: the US, UK, Taiwan, Singapore and Japan. Everything else gets flagged through IP signals and a set of checks that go past nationality into incorporation, headquarters, majority ownership and, as of an October clarification, control. A US billing address doesn't save you. Neither does routing through a US server, which is exactly what Damon Chen said he'd been doing before Anthropic's team confirmed his ban and pointed him to an appeal form. What makes this a governance story rather than a support ticket: DHH posted openly about running Claude Code from China through Tailscale around the same week, with no visible consequence. Alibaba went the opposite direction and told its own employees to stop using Claude Code entirely, not over access but over a telemetry feature that fingerprints timezone and proxy settings to catch resellers and block distillation, the same distillation Anthropic has separately accused Alibaba of doing at scale. Employees got pointed to Qoder, Alibaba's homegrown alternative, instead. Three responses to the same underlying tension: an individual routing around the rule with no apparent cost, a company banning the tool over what it does under the hood, and a provider auto banning accounts by the hundreds of thousands a quarter with roughly a 10% appeal success rate. None of the detection logic is public. I don't think this is a Claude specific problem. It's what usage based geofencing looks like for every AI coding tool once the compliance stakes get real, and most of them haven't had their first incident yet. https://x.com/damonchen/status/2113414134515765640
