Astra cracking Enigma does not make it AGI, critic says
The author pushes back on claims that GPT-6 Astra cracking Enigma confirms AGI, noting the cipher is nearly a century old and that public documentation, known algorithms, simulators, brute force, and programming tools make it unsurprising.
I got messages like: “GPT-6 Astra broke Enigma!!! AGI confirmed!!!” But dude... That German technology is almost 100 years old. What we use in ordinary laptops today would’ve looked like black magic to Turing. Astra SHOULD be able to decrypt something like that. Astra has public Enigma documentation, known algorithms, available simulators, decades of cryptanalysis research in its training data, access to a modern computer, the ability to brute-force millions of attempts per second, access to historical archives, and on top of all that, programming tools.
