Google just shipped its most powerful model ever, and almost nobody is allowed to use it. Gemini 4 Argon launched today to a vetted list of cyber defenders through something called the Fairwind Program. For those defenders, Google is removing the cyber guardrails entirely. And before any of this, the model went through the US government's voluntary pre-release review. A consumer AI company ran its product launch through the government first. Google isn't the outlier either. OpenAI said GPT-6 Astra crossed its "Critical" cybersecurity threshold last month. Anthropic gates Claude Mythos to approved organizations. Three frontier labs converged on the same playbook within weeks of each other. The reason is in the capability itself. Argon can autonomously find, validate, and patch critical software vulnerabilities. Finding and patching are defense. Finding alone is offense. The same weights do both jobs, so the only lever left is who gets access, and in what order. That's what Fairwind actually is. Google seeded it with 650+ partners like CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks, so defenders get a head start hardening systems before the model reaches everyone else, attackers included. A frontier launch used to be a keynote and a waitlist. In 2026 it's a government review and a vetted list of cyber defenders. The benchmarks tell you how smart the model is. The release process tells you how dangerous the labs think it is.
