OpenAI pausing $200 pro signups might have something to do with frontier pacing. here me out. openai launched astra on 3rd september. 7 days later they pause new $200 pro signups because of capacity issue. but surely they knew astra demand was going to be insane. tibo and the openai team were extremely confident in astra before launch, especially after fable 5.1 dropped. so either astra demand exceeded even their wildest forecasts. or openai is keeping a lot more compute headroom for alignment/safety research. probably some combination of both.
