OpenAI should establish an archival release policy allowing retired model GPT-4o latest , to be released as open weight model under an appropriate license once it is no longer part of active development. This would preserve access without requiring OpenAI to continue hosting, maintaining, or developing the model indefinitely. An open weight archival release would not require publishing the training dataset, the training pipeline, internal tooling, post training methods, or other proprietary development details. The objective is not to expose the recipe but to preserve the finished model. Researchers would retain a reproducible reference,developers could continue building on systems they already integrated,users would not lose access simply because a company moved on to a newer generation. OpenAI describes its newest systems as a new generation of intelligence,with GPT-6 Astra scoring 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3. If GPT-4o is now considered sufficiently obsolete to remove from both the product and the API, then what concrete interest requires making it permanently inaccessible? An archival open weight release can preserve the trained model without requiring publication of the training dataset, training pipeline, internal tooling, or post training recipe. What legitimate reason remains for making it disappear entirely? You call it obsolete enough to retire. Yet you still treat it as valuable enough to keep permanently closed. Open it @sama @gdb
