An AI agent that buys something for you still has to hand a merchant real money without ever touching your actual card number. @sjparsons, Senior Staff Software Engineer and Tech Lead at PayPal Braintree, now called PayPal Enterprise Payments, walks through three live ways that happens in "How AI Agents Pay: Checkout in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode," which @aiDotEngineer published on YouTube. For engineers building commerce into agents, it's a concrete rundown of what each integration path actually requires on the merchant's side. - ChatGPT checkout runs through an MCP app. The merchant builds an MCP app with embedded UI for product discovery; when the user checks out, the app talks to ChatGPT using OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol, the card gets tokenized against PayPal Enterprise Payments, and the merchant just processes the resulting token like any other. - Those tokens are tightly scoped. Sam notes they're locked to a specific merchant, a max dollar amount, a currency, and an expiration, and every transaction gets attributed back to where it came from, like ChatGPT. - Google AI Mode skips the UI entirely. Using the Universal Commerce Protocol, which he says is nearly identical to OpenAI's spec, the merchant doesn't build any checkout experience. They publish a well-known JSON file naming PayPal Enterprise Payments as processor, and Google Pay handles tokenization before handing the token back. - A third path gives merchants full control, at the cost of friction. An MCP app widget hands off to an external checkout page tied to the session, then updates itself automatically once payment completes. He demos this running inside Claude as a connector. - Elicitation is coming but not here yet. It's a newer MCP apps feature meant to make that external validation step happen inside an iframe instead of a separate page, though most hosts don't support it yet.
