Chamath says Meta Muse and Grok Bot are putting Apple’s 30% App Store fees on notice “Things like Grok Bot and Muse really put the App Store and its 30% rev share on notice. Because all of a sudden, you force many of these services to exist headlessly, where the UI is less important.” “And really what you want is to be able to transact and navigate on behalf of agents that come because a consumer has deployed them to your website. In that world, I don't think that there's any reasonable claim that any of the App Store owners can make about why they should get a rev share." “And so I actually think that's the biggest thing that this starts to question in my mind is, wait a minute, games could be constructed differently.” “For example, if you said to Muse or to Grok Bot, I want to play a game, it finds you an experience and it can just serve that to you. Amazing. And you make in app purchases, and now you have Stripe integrated naturally, there's no reason why the App Store actually gets that flow of funds.” “So on the surface, it's utility. But underneath the waterline, I think that this is a really important moment." "Think of how much money the New York Times or Wall Street Journal probably pays in rev share to folks that subscribe. And now instead, if you really wanted to transact and you have your credentials inside of these apps, you can just do it headlessly, much, much cheaper.” “Wall Street Journal is the only mainstream media publication I pay for. But both signing up and unsigning up is an impossibility. And now you take it all off the table, I'm much more likely to stay a Wall Street Journal subscriber for many more years from now. I think it's probably the same thing with the New York Times. These things are roach motels, they make it impossible to get in, impossible to get out." “What they should do is just have some headless experience. And you have payment credentials, and you just transact directly, and everybody will make more money. It's a lot of pressure on the App Store.”
