some thoughts on dots 1) dots were the main announcement on openai dev day; they are designed to move users from chats to a single threaded conversation available everywhere 2) i think that models are finally ready to do this and it is fundamentally a good interaction pattern; it comes in both a personal and enterprise version 3) the most interesting thing here from a commercial perspective is that the major announcement on dev day was not a developer product 4) it was positioned somewhere between a personal product and an enterprise white-collar work product; most of the use cases shown were non-developer 5) i think this shows that openai expects the next major market to open to be not developers but something else; my personal expectation is computer use 6) and, the branding is definitely designed to appeal to people that could find ai unapproachable; the cute avatar, almost dreamlike rooms 7) it's even amped up beyond what i think feels natural; the avatars are almost too cute; i do think a lot of people will have an emotional attachment 8) but, i think this will be a successful product launch, even if they eventually tune back the branding, in an attempt to avoid backlash, make it more enterprise 9) i think this was a good job from openai of being able to tackle consumer and professional use cases at once since oai needs to defend against anth and meta
