I used to view $META's AI efforts, if fruitful, as potential gravy on an already great business. BUT in the past 2 days, EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED! After using Muse and watching this interview with Mark Zuckerberg (@finkd) of Meta I think Meta has a real shot at taking the lead in AI and being the #1 player in as little as 2 years! Here are my key takeaways from the interview and why I think they have a shot at being #1: 1) Privacy is foundational: Meta recruited Signal founder Moxie Marlinspike @moxie along with Nat Friedman @natfriedman to build a confidential virtual machine so even Meta cannot see a user’s Muse content. They are hyper aware of privacy and how important it is to people! 2) His thesis: spread the tech wide. “Empowering people is the source of prosperity.” AI should invent new stuff, not just automate. Safety comes from checks and balances, not locking it in a few labs. His views are a massive contrast to those other AI labs who think AI might kill us all! I think Mark has the right balanced view. 3) New style of working: When Llama 4 was a miss (he said “when we launched that, I think we were off the trajectory that we needed to be on”) he ended up rebooting their AI efforts around talent density. A small team that can "keep the whole thing in their heads" sitting near him! It gave me the impression of war-room like mentality with super intelligent people. 4) Muse = the product version of the vision: “give every person in the world a very capable personal agent that can understand their goals and can just work on their behalf 24/7.” It has its own computer/VM. No need for a Mac Mini. 5) New models should ROCK: “We have Watermelon coming soon. So that’s going to be a big deal. It’s a very big advance. It’s a significantly more advanced pre-train…It’s good.” This is super exciting to hear. I wonder if Watermelon will be launched this month at the Meta Connect event. He implied it's already done! 6) Do they expect to be a leading lab? “Obviously we want to build leading AI models, which we’re doing.” And: “We should be.” Full-stack company, decades of data centers and extremely profitable which helps. He goes on to say how nobody else has all the pieces like Meta. Meta is now my front-runner bet, in 2 years, for frontier AI labs both in terms of top-end models AND revenue from products!
