Over at Artificial Lawyer (AL), a post describes, in some detail and with reference to recent work by Harvey and Legora, the impact of OpenAI's release of its latest model, ChatGPT-6 Astra, on AI's use in law. The post includes, among much additional analysis, a description of a rather impressive application by Harvey and Legora of OpenAI's latest software release to lengthy and detail-heavy problems that the release appears to have handled very well. "Are we there yet?" That is to say, have we reached the stage where 99.9% of the time lawyers can be confident that a complicated legal issue can be processed by a frontier LLM model without any human involvement? Unsurprisingly, the answer is still "no." But as reported in AL's post, what we're seeing with the release of Astra is a step change. From the AL post (all emphasis in original): “Harvey’s Niko Grupen, Head of Applied Research at the fast-growing legal AI platform, had this to say: ‘Astra is a significant quality improvement over GPT‑5.6 Sol across complex legal tasks. “‘In our early testing, Astra stood out by approaching legal work the way a discerning lawyer does: it distinguishes documents from established records, surfaces unsupported assumptions, and converts gaps into concrete drafting positions.’” “For Legora, OpenAI published a post with legal engineer Percevale Perks, which involved a trial of GPT-6 Astra on what they described as ‘one of the more tedious workflows … financial-statement tie-out: checking every figure in draft accounts against trial balances, a consolidation schedule, and the previous year’s accounts until each item agrees.’” “Using GPT‑6 Astra, Legora’s Agent completed the tie-out across 41 documents in a single run. The Agent did the work within minutes: checking every balance against its supporting schedule, surfacing breaks in the amounts, and recording each check. The result gives the legal professional a granular record of every line item and figure to review.” Read the entire AL post here: https://www.artificiallawyer.com/2026/09/07/harvey-legora-on-openais-gpt-6-astra/ #legaltechnology #legaltech @harvey @WeAreLegora @ArtificialLawya
