Okay, I've found the limits of Meta Muse working on a larger and more complex project with the Mac desktop app. Nothing that can't be fixed, but here are three things that just went wrong: 1. It can't work with files locally. It has to upload files to its VM, and these have a file cap. Muse tells me it's 50 MB, but it got stuck uploading a 1 MB text file for some reason, so something went wrong there. 2. Its local file permissions are limited. It couldn't decompress a local zip file without my help, nor move local files without my help. I'm still investigating whether these are issues with permission grants that I can resolve, or limitations of the app. 3. It leaks its chain of thought into the main chat thread. This is jarring. It's like the recent SNL skit with Dario Amodei talking to himself in a creepy voice. Muse would respond, and then there'd be a bunch of other injected responses that seemed like it was talking to itself. Like: "That's the confirmation for the README write I already reported — nothing new. The archive project is complete." Now, I should say, it still did the work. I had to decompress a zip for it, and run some terminal commands that it gave me, but overall it did the job well. It just took longer than I expected, because it had to upload stuff to work with, and it couldn't just do things I'm used to apps like Codex being able to do locally. Also, I had to tell it to clear up almost 700 MB of data from its VM when we were done. Oh, and one more thing: It really needs auto-approval. I had to do a bunch of manual approvals that I'm pretty sure a lot of people won't be comfortable doing, because they look scary, even if they're really not big deals. I think this all represents the tradeoffs Meta is currently making, trying to make Muse maximally useful and usable to the widest possible audience, recognizing that power users are probably going to use ChatGPT/Codex or Claude for their hardest tasks. I'm okay with that for now, but if Muse is going to become a serious contender to replace ChatGPT or Claude completely, it's going to need the ability to do more locally, while ideally not losing what makes it so easy and enjoyable to work with currently.
