Interesting approach from OpenRouter, especially the idea of making cache cost part of the routing decision But @theo raises an important point: how much can you really infer about task difficulty from the prompt alone? Jev is designed to make fast, structured decisions from the state it receives. But for agent tasks, important signals can live outside the prompt: codebase structure, dependencies, available tools, current state, architecture, and constraints “Fix this bug” could be a two-line change or something that requires touching multiple systems “Port this to Rust” tells you the goal, but not the environment the agent has to navigate So the challenge may not just be building a better router It may be building a sufficiently rich representation of the task before asking the router to decide how much reasoning it actually needs State construction becomes part of the routing problem itself
