A company came out of hiding. 24 days later it was valued at $7.5 billion. It has not told anyone how much money it makes. Meanwhile, another AI company just said it is now earning at a rate of more than $1 billion a year. Here is what the money in AI looks like right now, in numbers. First, the 24 day company. It is called TypeSafe. Its product is Jev, an AI model that does not write text. It returns a choice, a score or a probability. Think sorting a support ticket or checking if a document is an invoice. September 15: Jev launches with a $40 million seed round. October 9: Bloomberg reports about $870 million more at a $7.5 billion valuation, led by Andreessen Horowitz, with Sequoia in too. The company says it passed 1 million users. Bloomberg says about a third of the Fortune 500 use it. The customers are not named. The price is $0.042 per million input tokens. Output is free. Revenue was not disclosed. Rivals showed up fast. About three weeks after Jev launched, OpenAI opened its own Decisions API in public beta, at $0.10 per million input tokens. That is about 2.4 times the input price. Now the second company. It is called Modal, and it rents out the computing that AI runs on. October 14: Modal announces $750 million, led by Accel. The valuation is $15.75 billion. After its May round it was $4.65 billion. In May it said it had passed $300 million in annualized revenue. Now it says over $1 billion. Nearly a third of that comes from sandboxes, the hosted containers where AI agents run. $15.75 billion on about $1 billion of annualized revenue is roughly 16 times revenue. Add Manus, which raised over $500 million in its first round since splitting from Meta, and these three raises come to more than $2.1 billion, all reported within one week. Save this before you read the next funding headline. One. A valuation is a price tag, not revenue. Two. Always check if the revenue is disclosed. Three. Annualized revenue is today's pace stretched over a year. It is not cash in the bank. Four. Check how fast rivals can copy the product. For Jev it took about three weeks. And one more caution. TechCrunch notes that inference companies tend to run thin margins, because compute is expensive. One company shows fast adoption and no revenue number. The other shows fast revenue and an expensive business to run. Both just got paid.
