Personal App Builder skill produces a bike maintenance app inside ChatGPT
The author packaged their personal-app build process into a reusable skill and used it to create Cycling Garage with ChatGPT Sites hosting, persistent storage and MCP tools, verifying a saved inspection record through an embedded card.
Follow-up: I tested the ChatGPT route, and got past the UI gap I hit in my Grok experiment. After a working task app, I packaged the build process into a reusable Personal App Builder skill and used it to create Cycling Garage: a small app for bicycles, components, configurations and maintenance history. With minimal technical direction from me, it built the app using ChatGPT Sites hosting, persistent storage, ChatGPT sign-in and MCP tools, then prepared it for publication and plugin installation with my approval. The key test was inside ChatGPT itself: an embedded interactive card let me log an inspection. An independent database read confirmed the saved record, and refreshing the card showed it again. I could also access the garage from a separate chat. That takes this beyond generated code and passing local tests: hosted persistence, installed tools and an actual UI interaction all worked together. There are still limits. I used Work directly, without Dot orchestration as its not available in the EU on pro plans yet. The UI test ran with developer-mode CSP disabled, so this wasn’t a production-readiness test. All data was synthetic. The progress is a repeatable path from “build me a personal app” to an app I can use through ChatGPT, with its own interface and persistent data. ❤️
