GPT-6 family explained: Astra is the top tier, Sol is the everyday model

GPT-6 is not a single model: Astra is a new tier above Luna, Terra and Sol, and cheaper, higher-quota models like Sol will shape most users' experience.

Seen some people misunderstand what GPT-6 actually is, though that is largely thanks to OpenAI’s chaotic product design and naming strategy. GPT-6 Astra is not the entirety of GPT-6. Astra is simply a new tier above Luna, Terra, and Sol. That means we could soon see a lineup similar to the GPT-5.6 family: > GPT-6 Luna > GPT-6 Terra > GPT-6 Sol > GPT-6 Astra 6 Astra already exists in Chat under the name 6 Pro, available only to Pro users. It sits at the highest Thinking Effort level rather than appearing as a separate model option. Plus users currently cannot use Astra in Chat at all. They can only access it through Work or Codex. The messy rollout and confusing product design are a big reason so many people misunderstand GPT-6 in the first place. And frankly, even if you follow OpenAI closely, it is still difficult to fully understand everything they are doing. Whatever naming scheme OpenAI ultimately settles on, they are building a complete GPT-6 stack from lightweight models all the way up to the flagship tier. Right now, almost all of the attention around GPT-6 is focused on Astra. But the real GPT-6 family rollout is only just beginning. What will actually define the GPT-6 experience for most people in ChatGPT will be the cheaper models with much more generous usage limits, Sol, Terra, and even Luna.
