OpenAI may have created a powerful AI agent with Dots. But somehow, the name became the first thing people noticed. Dots are designed to stay active, work across apps, research information, analyze data, prepare documents and continue projects without requiring you to sit in front of ChatGPT. Each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser, powered by GPT-6 Astra. Then came the naming problem. “Dots” already overlaps with other businesses and AI projects. Even the domain http://dot.com currently redirects to xAI’s Grok page, creating an unexpected layer of confusion around OpenAI’s launch. There’s also a bigger irony here. OpenAI is trying to make autonomous AI feel approachable—giving these agents friendly, blob-like identities—while the technology underneath is becoming much more powerful and independent. That contrast may be intentional. AI agents are moving from something you chat with to something you delegate work to. And once that happens, naming, identity, trust and discoverability become part of the product—not just branding.
